Prior to restoring these breathtaking houses, thorough research was conducted in order to make the most appropriate decisions, to draft the proposals and begin the restoration works. These studies were carried out by competent professionals, specialized in historical, archaeological and architectural research. ￼The properties have been placed in the context of the rich history of our First City, as narrated in historical archives and specialized publications, and how they feature on old charts. ￼Other scholars have also analyzed the stories the buildings tell. It is this way that restorer architects and archaeologists have been able to provide us with the true story of these old houses. ￼With all the collected data, including also additional information concerning the extent of disrepair in which many of these dwellings were found, the right restoration proposals were made in order to begin restoration and rehabilitation works. ￼The performed works highlight the original attributes, which are part of their history, and asides being picturesque, they contribute in providing beauty to these still livable historical homes. Moreover, in the opinion of everyone who visits, the charm of our residences has been recovered. Thus, the pages of this publication are a brief testimony of the terrible conditions these properties were in prior to commencing the arduous, but necessary process of restoring this valuable heritage of the Colonial City and the Dominican nation.
